October 25 & 26: Catching the Light with Deena Ball at The Brampton Inn

Tuesday, October 25 & Wednesday, October 26 from 10 am-2 pm

Brampton Inn, 25227 Chestertown Rd, Chestertown, MD 21620

Plein air painting is a French style of painting landscapes while being outside and Chestertown’s Brampton Inn is the perfect location to practice and stay. The historic boutique inn’s private setting boasts 35-acres of unspoiled land invites guests to connect with nature and is just minutes from the town’s historic downtown. To reserve accommodations, please book direct at Brampton Inn for the best hotel rate.

This plein air painting workshop concentrates on catching the light and essence of a scene and a day. Students will work on compositional planning, using the practice of notan and value studies to get everything down before the light shifts. The workshop will start inside the first day with students learning about compositional tools and principals. Students will learn a series of planning steps that will help them create paintings outside with ease. In the afternoon, we will go outside in town and practice. The second day of the workshop will be spent Plein Air painting with special attention paid to composition, light quality and rendering buildings. There will be plenty of individual instructions and critiques. The goal of this workshop is that with careful planning and a clear focus students will be able to paint great paintings outside both quickly and with confidence. All Media Welcome.

If you have never painted outside before and want to try, this is an ideal course but please email Deena to discuss some type of painting set up and make sure you will be comfortable.

Since this course is mostly about methods and composition it is appropriate for all media and all levels. Deena is primarily a watercolorist but has worked in oils and water soluble oils.
