Join us to naturally dye a one-of-a-kind scarf. We’ll use fresh eucalyptus leaves to create a unique pattern on a silk scarf. Through the magic of Eco-dyeing the leaves impart their color to the cloth. And because we will be “cooking” our scarves in marigold dye they will be lovely shades of gold and orange and maybe some green. You’ll learn about the history of Eco-dyeing, good dye technique and how to care for your scarf. While the scarves are dyeing, we’ll explore the magic of indigo and dye a cotton bandana blue. You may have little free time to explore the shops downtown before we remove the scarves from the bath and have the “big reveal."

RiverArts is committed to accessible programming and to compensating artists and instructors fairly. We are offering classes on a 'pay what you can' basis. Those with limited funds are welcome to enjoy full access to the class for a small donation. Those who are able are invited to pay more to support access to art experiences for all.
Carol Reed is a natural dyer. She trained as a painter however a batik course in Italy introduced her to batik and dyes. Although dyeing is an unusual medium choice it actually is applicable to many substrates including paper, skin, wood, etc. After many years using synthetic dyes an interest in local resources, love of planting and the seasons led her to natural dyes. Currently she has her own dye garden and sources additional dyes through connections with local farmers and community members. She was born in Carlisle Pennsylvania and has lived and worked in the north east of the United States. Having been raised in a family of architects and art appreciators, art has always been a part of her life. Carol has traveled widely in the U.S. and Europe and a little in S. America. She would like to explore South and Central America further, especially their textile and dye traditions.
