On Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service this year, my favorite virtual volunteer opportunity was with Baltimore-based Art with a Heart (www.artwithaheart.net/). "Art with a Heart’s mission is to enhance the lives of people in need through visual art." Their innovative programs in leadership training, community service, workforce development, and public art reach all parts of their community.
One of their programs involves creating and selling colorful metal trash cans "decorated with hand-colored images in the style of Pop Art made famous by artists like Andy Warhol." These 4-gallon cans can be used for trash or compost -- or for storing pet food, birdseed, toys, and more! They are sold in HeARTwares, their social enterprise resource store whose proceeds benefit Art with a Heart's programs. https://shop.artwithaheart.net/product/pop-art-trash-cans-size-small/
Volunteers (like you & me!) color the graphic designs -- and then the cans are created by participants in Art with a Heart’s workforce development program & volunteers. All we have to do is print the designs, color according to their instructions, and mail completed color sheets to them! They are very appreciative of volunteers who are coloring images at home during the COVID-19 pandemic!
Participants must be able to:
Once you register, we will email you a file with detailed instructions that includes information about making sure you print the files in the correct size. Then click on these files to view, print, & color these PEACE designs:
We can also send you image files of crab, frog, or bunny designs. =)
We'd love for you to join us on March 3 for a brief tutorial with tips, a discussion of the color palette, and the joy of creating something together (even if everyone is at home working separately!).
You may do this at home at any time (I keep one handy for long Zoom meetings!), now and into the future as this is an ongoing program for them.
When you mail your completed designs to them, you are welcome to include their Volunteer Form (that we will provide) to help them track volunteer hours donated.
